Sue Ryder Care - Manorlands Hospice

The Mark 'Swifty' Swift Annual Memorial Golf Tournament and Auction help to raise funds in aid of Manorlands Hospice where the staff helped to take care of Mark during his illness.

We asked Andrew Wood a Fundraiser at Manorlands to tell us something about the hospice itself.

"Sue Ryder Care – Manorlands Hospice is based at Oxenhope, Keighley. It is one of 14 Sue Ryder Care hospices in the UK and each year it cares for almost 650 local people from Keighley, Bradford Airedale, and the dales.

Manorlands Hospice relies on voluntary contributions for the majority of its income and never charges patients for any of the care they receive. The hospice will cost £2.0 million to run in 2008. Over £1.1 million of this needs to be raised from the local community.

Sue Ryder Care is dedicated to helping the people it cares for to get the best from life and we care for the whole of an individual’s needs be they social, psychological, physical or spiritual. We care for people in the area living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses as well as providing support for their families and carers.

The services based at Manorlands Hospice include a 16 bed in-patient unit, a day therapy unit and community team as well as specialist bereavement counsellors and complementary therapists."

It's good to know we are helping a great cause!

Organisers of the third Mark Swift Annual Memorial Golf Tournament this week presented a cheque to Sue Ryder Care - Manorlands Hospice.

The tournament with stableford rules was held recently at Fardew golf course, East Morton where 36 golfers took part to raise funds for Manorlands in the name of Mark Swift who received long term care the Oxenhope Hospice.

The winner of this year’s competition was Andrew Beveridge with 46 points and the junior trophy went to Mark’s nephew, James Manley, for the second year running. Longest drive trophies were won by Dave Hawker and Darren Drake and nearest the pin trophies were won by Richard Meares & Andrew Beveridge. A new prestigious toilet seat trophy was also presented this year, which went to joint losers Trevor Smith & Darren Kennedy the latter of which they were delighted with as Darren explained. “My wife is always complaining that I never lift the seat, but I’ll lift this one with pride”.

James McGuinness landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton then kindly provided the venue and food for an after round party which included a charity auction and karaoke by Ian McGee who over the years has helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for local charities.

Organisers of the event Joe Manley & Ian Kennedy were delighted with the event as Joe explained, “We would like to thank everyone who contributed & who donated to the event, making it such a great success once again and most importantly raising funds for a very worthy cause in the memory of Mark (Swifty) Swift. “

The funds were presented to three Manorlands nurses who thanked the team for their hard work in raising the funds. Fundraiser Andrew Wood reiterated these thanks and complemented the team on their official blog site http://msamgt.blogspot.com . “The group has worked wonders for Manorlands and created a site which is a lovely tribute to Mark, provides a great example of the work of the hospice and is a rich source of information about the Mark Swift Memorial Golf Day.”
